Answered briefly

My AVGS was rejected: what can I do now?

By Dr. Janosch Leugner · Last updated: October 14, 2026

The short answer

An AVGS for coaching is a discretionary benefit, so a rejection is not the final word. First ask for the reason and get the decision in writing. A second attempt with a clearer explanation of why coaching gets you into lasting work faster often helps.

1. Find out the reason

  • Ask your caseworker what exactly the problem is: the goal, the timing or the justification.
  • Ask for a written decision. Only then do you know exactly what was rejected and by when you can respond.
  • Write down what was said in the meeting, with the date.

2. Common reasons and what helps

  • Direct placement is to be tried first. The employment agency and job centre usually check first whether they can place you in a job straight away. Explain why that does not work in your case, for example because your applications so far have not been successful. There is a ready-made building block for this in the AVGS application guide.
  • The link to taking up work is unclear. Describe a concrete goal: which jobs, what you are missing for them and how the coaching works on exactly that.
  • The timing does not fit. For example because another measure is currently running. Ask from when a voucher would be possible.

3. Prepare a second attempt

  • Take the AVGS check to see where your conditions stand.
  • Describe the goal, content and scope of the coaching concretely. What the voucher should say is explained on the page AVGS voucher.
  • Contact your caseworker again, in person or via a message in the online portal, and refer to the reason given.

4. If you want the decision reviewed

You can lodge an objection (Widerspruch) against a written rejection. The deadline is stated in the notice of legal remedies (Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung) at the end of the letter, usually one month. Whether it is worth it is best clarified with an advice centre for unemployed people or a social counselling service near you, as I do not give legal advice.

5. How I can support you

In the free intro call we look together at what went wrong and how your goal becomes clearer. I coach online by video, nationwide, in German, English, Spanish and French, and I take care of the AZAV-certified provider. How the coaching is structured is explained on the page How the coaching works.
